Ironman Arizona 2011

The weekend before Thanksgiving my Dad competed in an IRONMAN!!!
He has been training for over a year for this event.
For those that don't know, an IRONMAN consists of 3 elements. SWIM. BIKE. RUN.
Swim 2.4 miles
Bike 112 miles
Run 26.2 miles

This is a crazy, insane accomplishment... and I am very proud of him! Way to go Dad!
-------------------------

Here's some of the prep work... the swim, bike, and run bags. Special need bags... ect.
Lot's of prep work.

Practice swim the day before in Tempe Town Lake.

All equipment and bags must be checked in the day before. On our way...

The morning of the big race!
Up at 4am to get ready and drive in.
Race start.... 7am!

MAJOR shout out to my mom here...
She has put up with all of my Dad's CRAZINESS in preparing for this Ironman.
Training with his team and coach. Participating in half Ironman events all over. Training on vacation... from Lake Powell to China. The expenses. Training. Training. Training.
Did I mention the training?

Mom and Dad at the start...

My Dad was out of the water earlier than expected...
even though we were standing right there we missed him!
He completed the swim and off to the bike...

Here he is on the bike... one of the 3 times we saw him on this component.

We ate brunch at this awesome place... N COUNTER. We actually ate there twice.
We need one in SLC. So good.

My cousin Scott has a house in Arizona and was in town along with my Aunt Kathleen and Uncle Bob. It was so great to see them and I know that my Dad loved having them there to help cheer him on!
They met us while we waiting for him on the run.

The run...
Even after the swim and the bike... he was still looking good about half way through the marathon!

Saying hi to his fans!

Team Jim eating dinner while we waited for him to finish!

The finish was pretty amazing! We waited and stressed and waited for him to finish!
He has been training so long for this moment.
Guess what?!
HE DID IT!
Completed his IRONMAN in 12 hours 38 minutes!
(An average male his age will finish in 14 hours 15 minutes)

As he finished the announcer said...
JIM PHILLIPS! YOU ARE AN IRONMAN! FOR THE REST OF YOUR LIFE!!!

He had to call his coach Kari after his finished...
she has trained him and coached him through everything.
He was soooooo excited to tell her all about it!

Way to go Dad! So proud of you!

That is seriously insane! I can’t imagine doing one of those things, let alone all 3 at the same time! Huge accomplishment!

I love your dad. I am so proud of him too! He is crazy tho. I wonder if every person he passed he would say, "I've been trying to catch up to you this whole time."
